Here comes another great brew from San Diego powerhouse brewery Ballast Point. “Originating from an employee-only home brew contest, this award-winning hoppy pale ale is named after the tiny local fish known for late night frolics on shore”. Well balanced and incredibly tasty and refreshing. Another fantastic brew from one of San Diego’s most well-known brewery!
Appearance: The Grunion pours a golden/ light amber color with a very small head that disappears soon after the beer settles. Carbonation bubbles visible as they rise.
Aroma: Rich hoppy aroma, subtle hint of malt that is almost masked by a barrage of hops.
Taste: Immediately met with dry hops that very quickly transitions to a brief period of light malt. The flavor seems to be there and disappear as soon as it started with a dry finish. Hop flavor lingers for a brief period and trails off. Good flavor that is not overwhelming. Crisp and clean.
Mouthfeel: Medium to high level of carbonation, suits the flavors well. No real aftertaste, crisp, clean, and dry. Flavors are in and out almost as fast as you can take a sip
Overall: Hoppy pale ale but the bitterness and hop flavor doesn’t last very long at all. Hops soon move to a lighter, malt flavor, with a dry and clean finish. The Grunion appeals to many different types of beer drinkers because it moves from IPA to pale ale all in the same sip while still being balanced and smooth. Great beer to beat the heat and enjoy with a group of friends. Good for any occasion, always a solid choice.
