Belgian Quadruple Ale
The Reverend comes courtesy of Avery Brewing Company out of Boulder Colorado. Brewing since 1993, the founders of Avery pledged to “producing eccentric ales and lagers that defy styles and categories.” Dubbed “The Holy Trinity of Ales” the Reverend is well crafted take on traditional Belgian brews and goes down remarkably smooth considering its high alcohol content.
Appearance: Pours a dark crisp amber color, no haziness, and has creamy white head, some lacing as well.
Aroma: The Reverend has a very malty aroma with a hint of alcohol to it. Also has notes of caramel, molasses, cherries and fig.
Taste: Rich malty flavor that combine for a more sweet than bitter taste on the palate. Alcoholic taste is present but not overpowering. Flavors of caramel, cherries, and fig all blend very well with the malt flavor that leaves the drinker with a smooth finish.
Mouthfeel: Light to moderate carbonation levels. Can be boozy at first but after the first few sips the malt and flavors take over.
Overall: The Reverend is a very solid beer for those that enjoy Belgian style brews. Toasty malt flavor is very prevalent and mixes superbly with the caramel and fruit flavors. Alcohol tastes more prevalent at the beginning but is not too harsh or overpowering. Smooth finish and almost sweet aftertaste. Try it with their recommendation of sweet BBQ sauce!
