The Aliens popped over to visit our friends at Urge Gastropub‘s new location in Oceanside, San Diego this week! The well known restaurant teamed up with the new brewery Mason Ale Works creating a restaurant/whiskey bank/brewery/awesome hang-out hybrid that is sure to satisfy any alien or human. Urge has staked their claim in the ever developing community of Oceanside with a main focus on customer satisfaction, which isn’t that difficult when you have the beverage and food offerings this restaurant has! Urge Oceanside has been welcomed with open arms and have been consistently busy since they opened their doors up earlier this year. 

We had the pleasure of speaking with George Mora, the General Manager for Urge Oceanside, who guided us through various craft whiskey tastings as well as some of Mason Ale Works’ craft beer offerings. 

IMG_7427Urge Oceanside features 260 different whiskey offerings, 30 different wines, 40 draft beers, as well as various other liquor and non-alcoholic options.

The (Mason Ale Works) Beer!

The Friendzone Saison was one of the favorites for the night. A light easy drinking saison at 4.8% ABV. Showcasing earthy hops and a nice mellow spiciness.  

Wheat Girl Wasted is a hoppy wheat clocking in at 6.4% ABV with a medium bodied mouthfeel and smooth finish. Flavors of tropical hops and minimal spice blend together creating a delicious yet filling beer. 

Gose Be Trippin’ is of course a Gose style ale at 4.5% ABV, a refreshingly tart Gose with a classic dry finish. 

Head brewer Mike Rodriguez and Brewer/Cellarman Jason De La Torre do an amazing job creating these beers. Coming from such breweries as Lost Abbey, Saint Archer and Golden Road it is really not that surprising that these guys are kicking butt in this 10 barrel brewery. With clever names and delicious beer, the Aliens are sure to be sipping on some of Mason Ale Works offerings very soon. 

The Whiskey! 

Russel’s Reserve Urge Single Barrel #548 a small batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon at 110 proof. 

Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Barrel Proof Kentucky Straight Rye at 126.9 proof.

Parkers Heritage Collection a Kentucky Straight Bourbon at 108 proof. 

Seven Stills Chocasmoke American Whiskey at 94 proof. 

Seven Stills Dogpatch Cask Strength American Whiskey at 119 proof. This whiskey was the favorite for the Beer Aliens since this beer is a collaboration with Almanac Brewing Company! A smooth easy drinking whiskey with a slight tartness making this a wonderful transition for beer drinkers entering the world of craft whiskey. 

The Food! 

The Cheese Curds here are simply heaven on earth. Served with a chipotle aioli and deep fried in tempura batter, these curds melt in your mouth like heavenly clouds of cheese. Being extremely hungry aliens, we also scarfed down the Wild Whiskey Pork Chops and the Brown Sugar Braised Pork Belly which were both exceptional and paired well with our whiskey tasters. For desert we dined on the Chocolate Whiskey Cake (it was obviously a very whiskey influenced dinner we had) which was amazing and rich with a light fudge consistency.
