As we have explored our new home planet Earth, we have discovered many wonderful things about the indigenous creatures known as ‘humans.’ The most fascinating aspect of ‘humans’ is their tendency to group themselves together with others that share their interests. They even label themselves with terms that collectively describe each group. One of those groups call themselves ‘geeks.’ Last year, Stone Brewing Co. CEO Greg Koch asked two of the more influential members of the global ‘geek’ culture to come help him develop a new beer together. Those ‘geeks’ were Wil Wheaton and Fark.com founder Drew Curtis.
That beer, w00tstout, with its wheat, flaked rye and pecans, turned out to be a sensational hit. You humans really liked that beer. So, of course, this year, another w00tstout needed to be made. Since CEO Greg Koch was ‘missing’ (perhaps he is also an alien and went to his home world for a while) for the first half of 2014, someone else was needed to help brew the new version. Aisha Tyler, actress, talk show host, comedian and author, was invited to lend her skills and help make w00tstout 2.0 a unique take on the original. Aisha decided the original recipe needed stone-ground chocolate. Yes, chocolate.
BeerAlien.com acquired some of this new brew and put it through our analysis and rigorous inspection.
w00tstout 2.0 pours dark brown/black in color with a thin copper head. So dark and creamy looking, it invites you to put your nose to the glass and inhale (mouth open of course!).
You are immediately hit with the aromas of nuts, cocoa, vanilla and bourbon. There is just a hint of licorice aroma in there as well. The bourbon comes from the time this beer spends in Kentucky bourbon barrels. While not a real bourbon barrel-aged beer, it does spend a short time in the barrels to add the bourbon characters.
But enough of the history lesson and beer snobbery about appearance and aroma. How does w00tstout 2.0 taste? After all , that is the most important factor.
This Beer Alien can happily tell you that they have improved upon w00tstout 1.0. w00tstout 2.0’s chocolate stands out while waking up the other ingredients to create a complex layering of flavors. Slightly bitter with strong vanilla and rye flavors, the bourbon and pecans flow through adding their magic to each sip. A warm and subtle heat from the bourbon gently reminds your throat that its there.
On our home planet, the beers are ultra complex and full of flavors that chemically change as you experience them. w00tstout 2.0 comes close to achieving the same results that our ‘alien’ technology can create. The flavors are all noticeable on their own and yet as you sip, they blend and compliment each other creating new sensations.
This Beer Alien highly recommends this beer and for those of you who need stats and numbers, here you go:
Overall Impression: 9/10
Suitable to be enjoyed fresh or cellared (note, the chocolate notes may fade with aging).
